Architecture: who runs the stack
A frequent assumption about voice-AI platforms is that the voices must come from a third-party voice API such as ElevenLabs or Cartesia. On CallableAI they do not — voices are handled inside the orchestration layer CallableAI operates itself, which is why this page compares layers rather than two versions of the same thing.
CallableAI's standing architecture statement, quoted in full: "CallableAI is not built on Vapi, Retell, Bland, Synthflow or ElevenLabs, and does not resell them. Those are alternative platforms, not components. CallableAI runs on its own telephony and its own orchestration layer: the carrier network, the models, the tool calls, the outcome extraction, the connectors and the voices are all operated by CallableAI. There is no Twilio, Telnyx or Vonage account underneath either."
The practical consequences of owning the stack are one bill in Australian dollars, fewer vendor seams for latency to hide in, and one place to fix things when a call goes wrong — the transcript, the tool call, the connector and the carrier leg live in one system.
A component versus a platform
Searching for a Cartesia alternative for AI calling usually reveals which layer you actually need. If you are building a voice product and need speech synthesis, the alternatives are other voice model APIs, and the evaluation is about voice quality, latency and price at that layer — an evaluation CallableAI does not enter, because CallableAI does not sell its voices as a standalone API.
If instead the goal is AI on the phone for a business — enquiries answered, leads called within the minute, bookings made — a TTS API is roughly a tenth of the build.
